Sunset Plaza
A little over a century ago, the site of Sunset Plaza was an agricultural haven. In 1923, the Plaza and surrounding areas were yet to be developed. Sunset Plaza was overgrown with avocado groves, orchards, and poinsettia fields, and La Cienaga was yet to be paved. It was not until 1924 that the first commercial development on what would later be known as the Sunset Strip began construction. Many of the Plaza’s tenants included the legendary Trocadero, photographer George Hurrell, fashion designer Elizabeth Arden, and interior designer William Haines. The Comedy Store
Arguably the greatest stand-up comedy club in the world, The Comedy Store was founded in 1972 by comedian Sammy Shore, his wife Mitzi, and comedy writer Rudy DeLuca. Sammy, a longtime opener for Elvis Presley, opened The Comedy Store as the first all-stand-up comedy nightclub in the world, but it was Mitzi who created the name. Famous comedians like Tim Conway, Redd Foxx and Buddy Hacket were among the first to call The Comedy Store home, but in the 80’s and 90’s, The Store was exploding with stars. Howie Mandel, Jim Carey, Arsenio Hall, Sandra Bernhard, Richard Pryor, and Sam Kinson were among the household names who regularly performed at this joke box. Today, comedians like Joe Rogan, Bobby Lee, Whitney Cummings, and Sebastian Maniscalco bless The Comedy Store with their over-the-top punchlines and witty banter. Sunset Tower Hotel
Elegance and status have defined this Sunset Strip landmark since its inception in 1929. Designed by architect Leland A. Bryant with an incredible contemporary art deco style in one of the most dramatic positions on the Strip, Sunset Tower has been a hot ticket since the doors first opened. Placed purposefully around some of the most trafficked restaurants and nightclubs of the 1930s and ‘40s, everyone in Tinseltown wanted to live there. Some of the building’s affluent residents included Frank Sinatra, Howard Hughes, John Wayne, Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, and even Bugsy Siegel.
