Thomas Proctor is an American architect practicing mainly in Brentwood, Holmby Hills, Beverly Hills and Bel-Air. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in History from the University of California, Santa Cruz, concentrating on architectural history, and a Master of Architecture degree from the School of Architecture and Urban Planning at UCLA. In addition, he trained as well as taught design programs in Italy.
Since he started his practice in 1986, the renowned architect has focused primarily on residential design. Many of his homes have been crafted in the Mediterranean-revival and American-classical styles, as well as more modern designs. Proctor has cited his passionate interest in and knowledge of classical architecture as a strong influence on his work.
Proctor is widely regarded for his usage of the natural environment in designing a home. In an article for Traditional Home, his work was spotlighted for the way he used 100-year-old sprawling sycamore trees in the design of a new house. He used the trees to shape the home, including the placement of an ell-shape in the back.
In addition, Proctor has built and sold several landmark properties that make pronounced use of outdoor spaces to create the true “Los Angeles al fresco” lifestyle, in his own words.
Most recently, Susan Smith and Drew Fenton of Hilton & Hyland set a record for the Beverly Hills flats area with the sale of the Proctor-designed home at 706 North Hillcrest Road, which was listed for $23,500,000. Listing agent Ms. Smith said, “This home is truly one of a kind, converging style and substance.”
The Georgian Estate, completed in 2015, is the prime union of 1930’s period details with modern living. Features of the house include soaring eleven-foot ceilings, a walnut paneled library with bar, a vast formal living room, a generous dining room and sun-filled family room. It is an exquisite example of the beautifully detailed homes for which Proctor is known and celebrated.
The 2015 Will Rogers Awards named Proctor’s Georgian Estate Best New Residential Construction at its gala on October 15, 2015. As part of the award, Proctor’s work was recognized for his precise and diligent approach to design and his affinity for “doing it all himself—including all drawings and all site meetings—to make sure it gets done right.”
